The school's programs and curricula follow the values and principles developed by Maria Montessori and upheld by the Association Montessori International (AMI). Although each of our classrooms is unique, they share fundamental characteristics:
- Because children develop and and master skills at their own pace, Hollis Montessori students work according to their developmental levels rather than their biological ages.
- Multi-age classrooms encourage cooperative learning and allow for broad emotional and social development. Each multi-aged classroom encourages children to learn from each other, to master skills, and become facilitators of learning for their younger classmates.
- Teachers work with students for a three-year cycle, allowing them to know each child's individual needs and learning styles. When the teacher introduces concepts at developmentally appropriate times, work is more easily accomplished and even joyful.
- At all levels, the teacher's primary role is not the transmission of information, but rather that of observer, carefully guiding, supporting, and monitoring each child's individual needs and progress.
- Teachers provide an environment of calm, order, and joy in the classroom. It is their role to tap into the children's natural curiosity, encouraging them to become self-motivated, independent, and joyful learners.
